VASUKI NAGA BHADERWAH (J&K) --- "AKHETRI" Akshyatritya is celebrated as the Birthday of Vasuki Naga

Baisakhi also called Vaisakhi or Mesh Sankranti is the Solar New Year, which is celebrated across India under different regional names. In Bhadarwah this festival is a special day of celebrations as devotees get the privilege of having the darshan of their beloved Vasuki Nag Maharaj, after a long gap of three months.

Nagraj Vasuki, endearingly called as Vasuki Nag, Basaki Nag, Naga Basaka and Bashdev, is the presiding deity of Bhadarwahi Hindus. Four temples devoted to Shri Vasuki nag exist in Bhadarwah viz. at village Gatha, Naalthi, Bhejja and at Nagar. The temple at Vasak Dehra Nagar is regarded as His Durbar Sthan i.e. Royal court.

This temple is the focal point of all social, religious and cultural activities of Hindus of this region. The temple houses exquisitely carved and highly venerated idols of Nagraj Vasuki and Vidyadhar Naresh Maharaj Jimootvahan in black granite. Standing on Padam (lotus flowers), the four armed idols are adorned with exquisitely carved jewellery, ornaments and crowns symbolising their status as Kings. The canopy of nine cobra hoods over their heads signifies the suzerainty of Nagraj over the major nine nag dynasties.

The festival in Bhadarwah commences on its preceding night when the cotton quilts (Tasalli), which have been covering the idols of Nagraj Vasuki and Maharaj Jimootvahan, in all the temples of Nagraj for the last three months since Uttlan (Makar Sankranti), are taken off by the priests. In an elaborate ritual, the layer of frozen ghee over the idols is carefully removed. The statues are then dried with a soft muslin cloth, dressed and decorated with ornaments and flowers. Devotees start paying a visit to the temple since dawn with offerings. In the evening, ladies perform Maha Arti in the temple with rattan deeps (small ghee lamps made of wheat flour) brought from their homes.

The temple has two ancient idols of black color which are also shown in the picture, the idol on the right side is of Vasukinag Ji himself and on the left is the idol of Vidyadhar Naresh Raja Jamut Vahan Ji who was the best friend of Vasukinag ji.

In the war between the Garud Deva and the Nagas, peace was established by Vidyadhar Naresh Raja Jamut Vahan ji.This is the reason that Vasukinag ji gave Raja Jamut Vahan ji equal place with him.

J&K Dharmarth Trust created by Maharaja Gulab Singh, the Founder of J&K in 1846 is the caretaker of this holy place and traditional ornaments. On this day, here all the religious devotees contribute on their behalf and a huge Bhandara is organized, apart from this, a "Vishwa kalyan yagya" (Yajna) is also performed by the Rajpurohit Kul of Bhaderwah. On this day, the Zamindars of Bhadarwah do not plow in their fields and dedicate this holy day to Lord Vasuki Nag Ji Maharaj.
